A Composite PMI of 52.2 isn’t dramatic, but after recent months it counts as genuinely good news
Modest numbers that still felt worth a small celebration
The UK Services PMI returned to expansion territory at 52.1, pushing the Composite PMI to 52.2, according to the Credit Protection Association’s daily business briefing. Anything above 50 signals expansion rather than contraction, and after a run of gloomier readings, even a narrow beat above that line felt like genuinely welcome news in my inbox that morning.
Sterling noticed, briefly
The pound received some support from the stronger PMI figures, even as broader currency markets stayed distracted by a separate yen rally following coordinated US-Japan intervention that was, by most accounts, already losing momentum by the time UK data landed.
A single data point, not a trend yet
Economists I trust keep repeating the same caution, one month of expansion does not undo several quarters of sluggish growth, a reminder worth keeping in mind before anyone declares the recovery officially underway.
Fazit
A number just above 50 is not a triumph. After this year, it is still worth a genuinely relieved exhale. More of my reporting lives at my full archive.
